Overview
WC PayPal Gateway adds PayPal Smart Payment Buttons to the WooCommerce checkout. The customer clicks the PayPal button in the payment step, approves the payment in the PayPal window with a PayPal account or another funding source PayPal offers, and the order is completed on your store. Your server reads the PayPal order, checks its status, amount and currency and only then captures or authorizes the payment. The browser never confirms a payment.
It suits stores that want to accept PayPal with their own PayPal REST API app, in sandbox for tests and in live mode for real payments. The plugin has no PayPal webhooks, so disputes and refunds made in the PayPal account are not synced to WooCommerce. It has no Pay Later messages, no card fields, Apple Pay or Google Pay, no saved payment methods or subscriptions and no PayPal buttons on product or cart pages.
Key features
Server-side verification: status, amount, currency and ownership of the PayPal order are checked before any money is taken. One PayPal payment can pay only one order. If the cart total changed after the approval, nothing is captured and the customer approves the new total.
Capture or authorize: charge the customer at once, or only reserve the funds and capture or void them later from the order screen.
No double charges: capture requests are idempotent, an earlier attempt that PayPal completed after a lost answer is recovered, and a per-order lock stops double submits.
Pending captures: a capture under PayPal review puts the order on hold; an order action checks the status again.
Refunds: full and partial refunds from the WooCommerce order, sent to the PayPal environment (sandbox or live) of the payment.
24 PayPal currencies: HUF, JPY and TWD amounts are sent without decimals, as PayPal requires. The payment method is hidden for unsupported currencies.
Modern WooCommerce: classic checkout, Checkout block, the Pay for order page, HPOS. Test mode badge in the payments list, link to the transaction in your PayPal account, debug log without credentials or buyer data.
